Coral Springs have gone from strength-to-strength this year. They released their debut album Always Lost, Never Found, played heaps of shows and wowed us with their glorious mix of poppy melodies, stunning vocals and technicals skate-punk sensibilities.
Vocalist Jo is one of our favourite humans, so we fired questions at her!
Hello! Who are you and what do you do?
I am Jo, I sing in a band called Coral Springs.
How did you first get involved with the punk rock community?
I was actually a metalhead and a classical music nerd, but got dragged to an MXPX and Less Than Jake concert in 2000. I’ve been hooked to going to shows ever since.
What’s your favourite album of all time (and what do you love most about it)
Toughest question ever… A Wilhelm Scream’s Ruiner because it makes all my different choices in music overlap at their centre: skate-punk. And because their live shows are the best in the world.
There’s no greater sense of ‘punk rock community’ than always (literally) running into friends at shows and singing your heart out at the front. I chose this album mainly because of the timing of it in my life, I love every release they have done.
Who’s your favourite new band right now?
Hmm, I rediscovered Living With Lions with their album Island. Does that count? I am very excited to see what new songs Almeida will come up with, since they just released a short one!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about music?
To have fun. And yes, it is actually that simple.
Musically, what’s been your proudest moment?
So many proud moments… Playing our band’s album release show last February and other festivals the past years. Overcoming my stage anxiety with violin, for sure, with some great shows to remember it by.
Getting to sing with awesome bands like Much The Same, One Hidden Frame and Undeclinable at sick festivals like Brakrock and Punk Rock Holiday. Let’s not forget putting out an album with Coral Springs!
Who do you most admire in the scene at the moment?
There are so many great friends to mention here, but I’m going to have to say Chuck Ragan. He helped me get over my stage anxiety for violin and got me to play amazing shows with him and be more brave in music.
What have you got coming up that you’d like people to hear about?
Nothing I can already tell you about, unfortunately. Come back later! We’re play a bunch of birthdays in the upcoming months, apparently that’s a thing now!
